The Ultimate VTU Calculator for Engineering Students
Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU) operates on a Choice Based Credit System (CBCS). Navigating the grading system—especially when transitioning from SGPA to CGPA to an actual percentage—can be confusing. Our comprehensive VTU Calculator eliminates the guesswork, allowing B.E., B.Tech, and B.Arch students to instantly calculate their academic standing according to the official VTU guidelines.
How the VTU SGPA Calculator Works
The Semester Grade Point Average (SGPA) is your performance metric for a single semester. Every subject you study is assigned a specific number of “Credits” based on its importance and hours of study. To find your SGPA, the VTU SGPA Calculator uses the following formula:
- Formula:
Sum of (Subject Credits × Grade Points) ÷ Total Credits in Semester - Example: If you score an ‘A’ (8 Grade Points) in a 4-credit subject, you earn 32 points. This is done for all subjects, summed up, and divided by your total semester credits (usually 20 to 24).
Using the VTU CGPA Calculator
The Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) is the weighted average of all your semesters combined. You cannot simply find the average of your SGPAs; you must account for the different total credits in each semester. Our VTU CGPA Calculator handles this complex weighting automatically.
- Formula:
Sum of (Semester SGPA × Semester Credits) ÷ Total Degree Credits
VTU Percentage Calculator: The Official Conversion Formula
When applying for placements, higher education, or government exams, you will almost always be asked for your percentage rather than your CGPA. VTU has an official, strict mathematical formula for this conversion under the CBCS scheme. You can use the “Percentage Conversion” mode in our tool to instantly calculate this.
Percentage (%) = (CGPA - 0.75) × 10Example Calculation:
If your calculated CGPA is 8.25:
• Subtract 0.75 = 7.50
• Multiply by 10 = 75.00%
Our tool acts as an automatic VTU percentage calculator, converting your SGPA/CGPA into an exact percentage on the fly in the report section above!
Understanding the VTU CBCS Grading System
To accurately use this tool, it is important to understand how your raw exam marks translate to grade points. For students under the 2018, 2021, and 2022 schemes, VTU awards grades on a 10-point scale:
| Marks Range (Out of 100) | Grade Letter | Grade Point | Performance Level |
|---|---|---|---|
| 90 – 100 | O | 10 | Outstanding |
| 80 – 89 | A+ | 9 | Excellent |
| 70 – 79 | A | 8 | Very Good |
| 60 – 69 | B+ | 7 | Good |
| 55 – 59 | B | 6 | Above Average |
| 50 – 54 | C | 5 | Average |
| 40 – 49 | P | 4 | Pass |
| 0 – 39 | F | 0 | Fail |
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Does a backlog (F Grade) affect my CGPA?
Yes and no. When you fail a subject (F grade), you earn 0 grade points, which drastically pulls down your SGPA for that specific semester. However, when you clear the backlog in a subsequent attempt, your new grade points will replace the 0, and your SGPA/CGPA will be recalculated based on the new passing grade.
What is First Class with Distinction in VTU?
VTU classifies your final degree based on your CGPA. A CGPA of 7.75 and above (which equals 70% and above) is awarded a First Class with Distinction. A CGPA between 6.75 and 7.74 (60% to 69.9%) is awarded a First Class.
