How is the UPSC Age Limit Calculated? (The August 1st Rule)

The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) uses a very strict and specific formula to determine candidate eligibility for the Civil Services Examination (CSE). Regardless of when the preliminary exam is held or when you fill out the application form, your age is always calculated as of August 1st of the examination year.

For example, if you are targeting the UPSC CSE 2026, you must have attained the age of 21 years and must not have attained the age of 32 years on August 1, 2026. Our calculator automates this exact calendar math to prevent application rejections.

UPSC Age Limit & Number of Attempts (Category-wise)

The standard maximum age is 32 years with 6 attempts. However, the Government of India provides relaxations for various categories. Here is the official breakdown:

SC / ST 37 Years Unlimited (Till Max Age)

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

1. I am exactly 32 Years and 1 Month old on August 1st. Am I eligible?

If you belong to the General or EWS category, no. The notification explicitly states that the candidate “must not have attained the age of 32 years.” This means your exact age cannot be 32 Years and 1 Day or older. You must be 31 Years, 11 Months, and 29 Days or younger.

2. Are final year graduation students eligible to apply?

Yes. Candidates who have appeared for a qualifying examination and are awaiting results can apply for the Preliminary Exam. However, proof of passing must be submitted before the Main Examination. You must still meet the minimum age criteria of 21 years on August 1st.

3. Do EWS candidates get an age relaxation or extra attempts?

No. Economically Weaker Section (EWS) candidates receive a 10% quota in vacancies, but their age limit (32 Years) and number of attempts (6 Attempts) remain identical to the General/Unreserved category. Verify full details via the Official UPSC Website. (Outbound Link)
