Age Limits for Driving Licence in India
Under the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, the Regional Transport Office (RTO) has set strict age criteria for issuing Learner’s Licences (LL) and Permanent Driving Licences (DL). Knowing your exact legal age is the very first step before booking your RTO appointment.
- 16 Years (MCWOG): You can apply for a license to drive a Motor Cycle Without Gear (engine capacity up to 50cc). Note: This requires written consent from a parent or legal guardian.
- 18 Years (LMV / MCWG): The standard driving age in India. You are eligible to drive Light Motor Vehicles (Cars, Jeeps) and Motorcycles with Gear.
- 20 Years (Transport Vehicles): To drive commercial or transport vehicles (Taxis, Trucks, Buses), you must be at least 20 years old and usually hold a standard LMV license for at least one year.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
1. Can I get a Learner’s Licence at 17 years and 11 months?
For a standard car or geared motorcycle, no. The Parivahan system will strictly reject your application if you are even one day short of your 18th birthday. You must wait until your exact 18th birthday. Use our calculator above to see how many days are left!
2. Are Electric Scooters (EVs) allowed for 16-year-olds?
Yes, provided the electric scooter has a maximum power output of 250W and its top speed is electronically limited to 25 km/h. High-speed EV scooters require the rider to be 18+ and possess a standard two-wheeler licence.
3. What documents are valid for Age Proof at the RTO?
The RTO accepts your Aadhaar Card, PAN Card, Passport, Birth Certificate, or 10th Standard (SSLC/Matriculation) Marksheet as valid proof of age.
